Doctor Who: Vampires of Venice

… coming straight on from the last episode, the humorous beginning with the Doctor collecting Rory to sort Amy out…

The relationship between the Doctor, Amy and Rory did not sit happily with me. But, I wonder if that’s the point? Not just for this episode, but for the set up of the series. Is this part of a general theme of just how travelling with the Doctor is dangerous. Not just physically, but in terms of dealing with other people on an emotional level.

Potentially, very powerful stuff to keep an eye on.

But, generally, I enjoyed this episode as a bit of a silly romp paying a bit of homage to the Hammer House of Horror. I adored the scene when the Doctor is delighted by the sexy girls in long flowing white nightdresses, fangs and claws out, advancing menacingly on him. Not only could it be read as literal; there’s the sheer delight discovering VAMPIRES, as well as discovering the reason why they can’t be seen in a mirror.

Someone else (in the pub) suggested that this was the first one of this series with a real villain. Rosanna of the House of Calvierri was utterly, utterly wonderful in the same school as Vivien Faye and Miss Winters. As for her son – I was reminded of those Little Britain skits involving the adult son breast feeding from his mother. Creepy, indeed.
